ARTS 107, Color and Composition

Spatial Effects, Dawn Hunter, Project Author.

Spatial Effects, Final Composition

Students adapt their Plein Air drawings into a final painting that explores spatial depth through the transitioning values of color.

Spatial Effects, GrAy Scale PLein Air Preliminary

To prime themselves conceptually for the project, students draw Plein Air landscapes (above) that are then translated into digital sketches (below) that explore the range of brilliance of a color.

Spatial Effects, Color Transition Physical Preliminary, #1

Students explore the brilliance of a color in a physical preliminary prior to creating their final painting.

Spatial Effects, Digital Preliminary

To develop agility with digital technology, we incorporate handheld device digital platforms. We utilize this technology as a digital sketchbook. Before painting their highly crafted preliminary scales and final paintings, students understand concepts and color schematics on a digital platform. Like any sketchbook, the expectation is that their digital sketches remain raw and not polished.

Spatial Effects Physical Preliminary, #2

Students engage in perceiving how different background colors effect the spatial depth of repeating pure color forms.

SPATIAL EFFECTS, COLOR TRANSITION PHYSICAL PRELIMINARY

Students explore the brilliance of a color in a physical preliminary prior to creating their final painting.

Spatial Effects, Final COmposition

Students adapt their Plein Air drawings into a final painting that explores spatial depth through that values of color.

Spatial Effects, Final COmposition

When the weather is not conducive to drawing outside, students adapt their concept with preexisting examples of the Spatial Effects concept in the media. This is an example of an appropriation of a film still from the movie Trolls.
