A Play with Planar Forms: Long Term PRoject ARTS 103

ARTS 103 Open House Exhibition

Deconstruction, Extraction, Interpretation, and Reconstruction.

The Planar Form Project: Students deconstruct their Negative and Positive Space drawings by extracting planar forms. They then re-conceptualize those forms in new compositions that reinterpret the content while reconstructing new forms.

A PLAY WITH PLANAR FORMS: LONG TERM PROJECT ARTS 103.
Dawn Hunter, Project Author.

Planar Forms and Planar Form Thumbnails

Students select forms from their deck to utilize in metaphoric, abstract, compositions. Prior to inking any finished work, they generate a series of thumbnail sketches, above.

Above is an example of the cards from the Planar Form card deck.

Planar Form Project A

This is an example of a finished Project A. India ink on paper.

Planar Form Project A

In the long term Planar Form Project all students complete two finished projects: Project A and Project B. Each project has its own criteria to be fulfilled. Example of Project A criteria listed above.

Planar Form Project B

This is an example of a finished Project B. India ink on paper.

Planar Form Thumbnails

In a series of six thumbnail sketches, students generate a minimum of three different options for Project A and Project B. They use a wide variety of their Planar Forms from their deck. They are not required to use all twenty forms from their deck. The number of unique forms in a composition is up to each student.

Planar Form Project B

In the long term Planar Form Project all students complete two finished projects: Project A and Project B. Each project has its own criteria to be fulfilled. Example of Project B criteria listed above.

Planar Form Turning Up the Heat Oversized Thumbnail Collaboration

Students engage in a collaborative learning experience by swapping thumbnails. Instead of a traditional critique where students hang their work and discuss it, in the Planar Form: Turning up the Heat Collaboration, students recreate each others' thumbnails. Through this active engagement, divergent compositional ideas and alternate forms are explored.

PLANAR FORM PROJECT A

Project A requires students to utilize approximate symmetry in the work. That requirement drives the concept, organization and image construction.

Planar Form PRoject A

There are a lot of responses to the project. Sometimes students treat it like a puzzle and arrange the forms to create recognizable imagery, and optical mixing to create textures that also generate a range of values.

PLANAR FORM PROJECT A

Project A requires students to utilize approximate symmetry in the work. That requirement drives the concept, organization and image construction. In the design of implied space, the creator of this work also shifted the scale of forms and created spatial depth, too.

PLANAR FORM PROJECT B

Project A requires all of the forms to be opaque, and Project B requires transparency. Unlike Project A, in which all of the forms must be opaque, Project B has more flexibility in that only some of the forms are required to be transparent. Above is an example of Project B that has been inspired by Kandinsky's work.

PLANAR FORM PROJECT B

Crescendo is a compositional requirement of Project B. Above is an excellent example of this concept applied to the work.

PLANAR FORM PROJECT B

Sometimes in Project B when forms overlap they create new forms and textures. Students begin to consider how a jagged edge verses a curved edge effect the perceived content of the work.
