These drawings were created by researching the Fashion Photography, Fashion Editorials, and ADvertising within Condé Nast publications Spanning a twenty year Period. I focused in particular on issues of VOgue and Vanity Fair Magazines.
Spectacle Spectacular, Paintings is a series of mixed media drawings and paintings in which I analyze, deconstruct, and reconstruct the seasonal fashion forecasting of issues of American Vogue from the twenty-year period 1980-2000. In that period, Vogue’s representations of idealized femininity underwent a striking shift, from images that promoted self-empowerment to those that suggest a woman’s sense of self-worth is determined largely by her ability to conform to contemporary social norms of grace and beauty. The magazine’s iconography of femininity thus evolved to create a Cinderella-like transformation myth, which proposed that by undertaking an extensive range of self-improvements, any reader could achieve the goal of becoming the ideal woman. Because fashion magazines are so widely read by young women, and because Vogue is such an influential industry leader, the impact of this shift in Vogue’s presentation of ideal femininity is potentially profound. It not only invites women to seek self-worth from external sources rather than from within it also encourages self-objectification via its message that the body is a malleable object that can be slimmed, waxed, plucked and massaged into perfection.
